World Junior Carp Tournament 2007
A Marshall's View

Marshall Mar-e of the "Bite Me Bait Co." poses with tournament creator Tom Felton.
Waddington, New York.
The ride from Rockland Massachusetts to Massena, New York took about 6 hours. It was a beautiful trip across New Hampshire and Vermont. The scenery was awesome as always. From there we entered New York State at it's most northeast corner. All along the way we talked about what to expect when we got there. Well it was a lot different than we thought. Thursday evening we met with officials, at the Civic center in Waddington, and went over the ground rules and got assigned a swim. Little Sucker Brook was the call, and after a brief visit to a local gathering place, we went back to the motel to await the dawn.

Dawn and Elmer reads the waters to help put the kids in a good spot to catch fish.
Children of all ages were there with their parents and family members. Handicapped children also found a peg to fish at. Gear was unloaded, bivvies set up, and at 7AM the whistle was blown and off we went. Day one turned out to be somewhat boring at our swim. On the day, we only took two fish and had a half dozen runs. The excitement came near the end of the day when a vicious cold front came through and 50 mph winds turned everyone upside down in seconds. The marshals hustled to save the day and we did, with plenty of haste.

Day one came to a close with a beautiful rainbow and a slow fishing day.
Day two was the complete opposite. Starting at about 07:08 the bite started. The fish came on a regular basis and kept me running from peg to peg to net fish. The tournaments largest carp, at 35 pounds 10 ounces, was caught at my swim. The smiles on the faces of the kids and their parents made the day. These young fishermen and women were sure competitive. With cell phones and parents running back and forth to see the leader board, all were kept appraised of their position.

CAG Connecticut's own Mike Dragone get his usual 32+ pound fish, but son Gaetone, gets in on the prizes
Being a marshal can be hazardous to your health. Getting up and down the rocks to net the fish is quite an experience. I only fell twice but got all fish in the net. Sunday morning reminded me of all the fun I had.. Ohhhh get the Aleve. Mar-e had a fun time weighing the fish and taking photographs. She turned in a full sheet of fish to be recorded. The awards ceremony capped off the day and with Tom Felton on stage, the place was full of smiles.

Being a volunteer at a function like this one was a pleasure. Mar-e and I will be sure to keep this one on the list of things to do. Congratulations to all that won prizes and to all who participated. Thanks to CAG for a strong showing.
