Ponkapoag Board Walk

One of the Blue Hills' best destinations is the board walk out thru the cedar swamp and bog to Ponkapoag Pond. This quarter mile or so of plank boards will bring you out thru several thickets of brush, bramble and cedar to the north side of the pond. You can park off Rte 128 at the Ponkapoag Trail entrance. Then follow the road around to the right. a 1/4 to 1/2 mile along you will come to a wooded area near the "camp" look for the trail on the left.

There are good views of of the bog with plenty of open spaces to see across hundreds of yards of bog and forest. Anytime of year is great for viewing the wildlife. Sometimes deer can be seen at the edges, birds of all kinds, including many different waterfowl. Wood duck and teal along with different mergansers, bring a special beauty to the hiker.

Late winter evenings are my best times to visit. As night falls and everything goes quiet with luck you may hear the call of the Great Horned Owl. Ice fishing always draws people to Ponkapoag Pond to chase bass, pickerel, perch and an occasional tiger muskie.
