Plenty of big fish along the outer cape beaches!
Tuna was slow today with only one fish caught amongst all the boats in the area, so we adjusted and had some fun catching bluefish. The fish averaged 8-12 pounds and there was no end to them.

Captain Dave Patry says "We are catching quality slotted fish on every trip out!"

August is tuna time on Stellwagon bank with slotted fish being caught on a regular basis. Boats may take one fish under 59 inches and one under 47 inches all others are released. Today Captain Dave took his favorite cook Vivian, the "Angel", owner of Anita Marie's restaurant in downtown Rockland, and her husband Mike aboard the Cathy Ann to Stellwagon Bank. The gear wasn't even all set out when the cry "Fish on!" was heard. Then, after a lengthy battle, Mike landed his fish. When he saw it fit neatly into the proper slot it made his euphoria complete. "Tuna steaks and eggs anyway you like them. That's the special tomorrow. with tuna omelets #2." laughed the "Angel" "What a day! Tuna, blue sharks and cod!" "We have been boating fish in the right slots for a while now." said Captain Dave. "This bad weather will just get the fish feeding more than ever."

Lucas Clan Aboard the Cathy Ann
"Striped Bass was our quarry today and boy did we have a good time! Captain Dave Patry put us on fish right from the gitgo." said Dan, patriarch of the clan. "It's great to have the boys all together and everything was perfect."

Jeff, Chris, David Jr., Dan, Mark, David
"Captain Dave and I go way back and I always hire him out for the family fishing outing. What a way to spend quality time with my sons and grand sons. "I make sure they get the best spots to catch fish." chipped in Capt. Dave. "I'd have to listen to him at breakfast for the next year if they don't catch anything. Today we fished off the tip of the cape around P-Town. The changes of the tides seems to trigger the bass into feeding and we were hooking fish on most passes. Wire line and jigs did the trick today in 25 feet of water."

News from the Bank and beyond!
Cathy Ann out of Green Harbor reports landing a 38 inch Halibut
Captain Dave Patry says this maybe his second one this year as he released a smaller one on a previous trip that someone said was a fluke. All in all ground fishing is still good. Mate Twig is seeing the union about have to stoop to the level of the Captain when being photographed. "Striped bass have been a little hit or miss but we still pick up our fish. " said Twig. "Tuna Time is upon us and the fish are starting to co-operate. The bank and areas to the east and south still have whales a plenty and we see our fair share every time we go out."

River Captain Parcell Post joins his wife "The Angel" and "Little Angel" at Anita Maries.
"The fishermen come in here all the time because we open early to cater to their schedule. It's no wonder we like fishing as a family. We have been watching the Bite Me Bait Co and listening to the "tall tales" for years. We all agree the Elmer stories are best. Not the ones he tells but the ones he is in. They are just too funny. It's always good to start the day with a laugh and with these guys the laughs never stop." smiled Vivian owner of Anita Marie's. "Captain Dave is no different. He always has a great time at breakfast, then off he goes. He was glad to see "little" Mike get his fish. Mike hasn't stopped talking about the whole day yet."

Rachel and Meagan hug each other as they find out they have made the boat list. "We love fishermen!"
The sky threatened rain but that wasn't going to be an issue with any of us. With a nice warm cabin and all the amenities at our disposal waiting for us, who cared. So after a nice hot breakfast served up by the friendly staff at Anita Marie's in Rockland Center, it was off to Green Harbor Marina and the "Cathy Ann" "We will get plenty of fish today." said first mate "Twig". "The Captain has been bringing in plenty of fish and happy fishermen these days. We fish for whatever the customer wants. Cod fishing is still going strong though we rely on our best spots to still hold fish. Striped bass are hot right now too so we sometimes do both on the same day if all goes well.

Hey Captain Dave, Elmer thanks you, Billy Bob thanks you, Zipcode thanks you, Dan thanks you and if our mothers were here they'd thank you too!
"It's a pleasure bringing out the Bite Me Bait Co gang." says the Captain. "That Billy Bob is quite a computer whiz and does a great job fishing too. Zip does a bang up job fixing my breakfast. He found out fishing can be work too! Dan and I go way back. And Elmer, well' he's more like......well...There's just no words for Elmer."

"Cathy Ann"
and crew land another nice tuna!
55inch fish makes the trip.
Tuna fishing has been slow most of the season with things beginning to heat up somewhat. Those who spend the time on the water gets the best results. Today's fish was caught on a dark squid bar rig. "We got to where we set out the gear and hooked up shortly thereafter. Then that was it for the day." lamented Captain Dave. "The fish just aren't there this year like they were last year."

Elmer's cod and fluke stones.
It's tough being the guy who is always losing gear. In some of the rougher weather I have lost as many as 4 Norwegian jigs and they aren't cheap. Lose a couple of the Captains and........well you can see where this is going. So I set out to make a jig that is inexpensive, but catches fish too. Well I looked at my weight bucket and it was empty so I looked up Capt. Bill from Quincy Yacht Club and he provided me with enough weights to fish with for the season. Then I set to work. As you can see it isn't hard to do. A couple of stainless eye bolts, epoxy (2 part) and a split ring and a hook. I spray painted mine metallic silver in the end. I dabbled with different colors but the silver seems to work the best. Some I rigged with the eyes buck tail style. They all catch fish.

"Jimdogg" leads the crew this day and "Billy Bob" held up his end too!
As great minds think alike. The first boat we ran into on the bank was the "Cathy Ann" out of Green Harbor. Here Elmer receives hand signals from Capt. Dave Patry describing the proper drifts to set up on. Looks like it's drift #1.

Cod fishing April 24 2010
Captain Dave Patry joins up with the Bite Me Bait Co for ground fishing expedition! "I needed good fishermen to fish in the rough waters at one of my new secret spots." said Capt. Patry. "These guys will put fish on the deck and know how to keep their mouths shut." Billy Bob smoozes the Captain as first mate Twig looks on. "Did I tell you what a great time I had tuna fishing last year Dave?" smiled Billy Bob. "That's Captain Patry to you." laughed Dave. "Somehow I'm sure you'll be around for the blue fin tuna trips." Twig was only mildly upset with Billy Bob for hogging the limelight.

"This year is picking up from where we left off last season! Every time out we reach our quota of Atlantic Cod and plenty of Pollock to go around." says Captain Dave. " I hope the striped bass and tuna do just as well."
"I didn't believe all of Elmer's stories about the intensity of the fishing." said first time cod catcher, Dr. Dan Lee. "I could barely stay standing with the rocking and rolling of the boat. But my son Chris and I soon got our sea legs and plenty of fish onto the deck. By the time we hit the dock on the way home I knew I had put out a lot of energy. Can't wait to do it again."
Dawns early light had Jimdogg, Billy Bob and Elmer at the dock in Green Harbor. We were an hour early and enjoying every minute of the wait. Even at that early hour the dock is a busy place. Cars and trucks loaded with anxious fishermen were pulling in at steady stream as boats could be heard firing up their engines. Voices full of optimism for a good day on the water left everyone in a positive frame of mind and no one went home unhappy. Captain Dave and mate Paul Cronin, (Twig) soon had the Cathy Ann ready for duty and with only a minor slow down, blamed on poor Elmer, we were underway. The trip out was a blend of nice weather and conversation. Meanwhile the Captain was skillfully maneuvering the boat, losing any potential spies as we headed to a new spot to try. We hit fish as soon as we dropped our lines with multiple hook ups of Pollock. Captain Patry showed us one of his secret spots and it panned out for everyone. Soon the deck was covered in fish and Twig was busy sorting out the keepers from the throw backs.
Twig coaches the rookie Chris Lee while Elmer coaches the "Real" rookie. his dad Dr. Lee. "First lesson. Be very careful when I have a fish on, or your liable to end up in the drink." Said Elmer. "You'll get a "reel' stress test out here." "How do you remain standing? That's my first question." queried the good doctor. The newbies held their own in rough seas and caught their fair share. Both Dr. Dan Lee and son Chris caught their first cod and Pollock .
Bob hooks and lands one of the many good size Pollock we caught. 2009's Fisherman of the Year was in fine form hauling in plenty of cod and Pollock for the box. "I got some great video of Dr. Lee catching. Didn't that smile of his say it all!"
"Hey, watch out there buddy you may be in violation of rule #1! Did you ever hear of Jonah?" laughed Elmer. "Your not a rookie any more."
Dr Lee assumes the proper placement on the deck as Elmer adds another one to the box. "Hey Elmer, put the cod in the cod tote not the Pollock one!" yelled Twig. "Doing the best I can Twig, I just have too many to toss."
"Hey Doc It hurts when I do this." said Twig. "Then don't do that." answered Dr. Lee. Twig continued, "Well your a cardiologist, should I put my heart into my job?" Even the gulls were laughing.
Plenty of whale action as the pods feed on the tons of sand eels and other bait that make this area a mecca for game fish and marine mammals. This particular whale hung around for a while feeding near the boat. There were plenty of whales in our area and that just makes the memories of a great fishing trip that much better.
Billy Bob was giving Chris some pointers on hanging on as the boat rocked and rolled. "Yes Chris the ladder elbow lock can be very effective!"
"I hope my dad takes me again soon . We had such a good time." said Chris. "Wait till he sees the amount of fish he has to take home." said Billy Bob.
"Fish whore at 2 o'clock! cried Elmer. We dodged some of the fleet boys that came down to see how we were doing. "Hang on boys we're moving. We're not giving any secrets away today." cried the Captain. "Everyone has a honey hole or two out here you protect."
Back at the dock Twig made short work of a lot of fish. There was plenty of fish for all! Thanks to young legs we got the fish to the coolers and headed home.
Thanks Captain Dave & Twig our mate on the Cathy Ann for a great time.
"Was I supposed to clean all of these myself." said Twig tongue in cheek.

After breakfast it was off to Green Harbor. The weather wasn't perfect and the early part of the day was somewhat bumpy. We fished near the southern end of Stellwagon Bank and there was plenty of company. The Captain and the crew were outstanding as usual. Special thanks to 1st mate Paul Cronin and 2nd mate Bill Mc Garry as they did a great job helping with the line tangles and chipped in with fish of their own.
|
|
The Cathy Ann has a wide beam and there was plenty of room for everyone on board. Jimdogg looks on while Paul takes one of Bill's fish to the fish box. Capt. Dave adds his own cod to the box and Bill makes sure to keep an eye on the goings on. Below, Mar-e earned special attention from the Capt. while catching her first codfish. Elmer shows a typical fish we caught today. Here are some friends we often meet out on the "bank".
|
|
Everyone caught fish today and we had our limit of cod on board when we set out for the dock. Norwegian jigs and pink teasers made Jimdogg and Elmer the hot hands today. Most everything worked as the fish were plentiful. Capt. G-No, Jimdogg, Rock Bottom and Billy Bob are full of smiles as they bring in the bounty of the sea.

This was one of our best cod fishing trips as a group in 5 years. We brought in over a hundred pounds of fillets and everyone went home happy. Call or contact Capt. Dave Patry and the Cathy Ann for a charter that's worth the money.

Fishing aboard the Cathy Ann

The ride over seemed short and before we could get all the gear out, we hooked up. The first one was a beauty and Billy had him aboard with out incident. The day was not boring as we hooked into 4 nice "football" tuna. The next fish was mine and I jumped when the fish hit and the drag started screaming. The fight was great and the fear of losing a nice fish kept me focused on the task at hand. Capt Dave was steady with the gaff and I had my first ever tuna in the boat. The fish ranged from 42-54 inches. We were kept busy with fish hitting every 30-45 minutes. Two we kept for steaks and the biggest one, caught by the captain, was photographed and released. One shook itself free at the side as Billy Bob reached for the leader. Captain Dave enjoyed every minute of the day and was glad to have the "Bite Me Bait Co." aboard. "As good a group of fishermen as we get aboard the Cathy Ann." said the captain. The ride home was great knowing that soon we would be grilling fresh tuna steaks.
