Barrier Beaches under siege!

Saquish Beach ,Plymouth Massachusetts

Last autumn this beautiful summer home was more than 100 feet from the high water mark. Now just 30 feet remain between it and destruction. Recent severe weather has already damaged many of the summer homes that dot the dunes here, but this weekend storm may just mean the end of a half a dozen or more homes that have no more dunes in the way.

On the brink and beyond.

Some are poised on the brink and others already have their feet in the water. With a severe Nor'Easter with winds in excess of 50 MPH heading their way, some of the owners were trying their best to save what dunes they could. "Some houses are going to go tonite and tomorrow." said Jo JO a local owner who has been coming here since childhood. " I hope we don't lose the place, but it doesn't look good. My dad built this place in the 50s and it means a lot to me."

The race against time and tide.

All the volunteer work done over the last few years, couldn't stop the surges of seawater from washing the sand away.

The most severely  damaged area runs from the Gurnet to halfway down the beach toward Saquish Head.

We will return on Monday after the morning tide to see what happened during the storm.

Long time summer residents, AC and Miss Vicky smile for the camera, but in their hearts they know this could be a sad day. " If I don't laugh I'll cry." ,said Miss Vicky. "This is terrible. There is so much sand missing!" AC echoed the sentiment. "Such a beautiful place being destroyed. What a shame. I don't think being on the inside road is going to help us fare better when the flood comes. We'll just hope for the best."

Meanwhile an angry sea awaits the turn of the tide!!!
